I’m chuckling about your “hi!” messages on Slack. This is my pet peeve. I often will respond (rudely) with a link to nohello.com.
In regards to async communication, it could be a nice Slack feature for new team members whereby when you start a DM conversation with someone Slack could note something like, “John Smith normally responds to messages within X hours.” This could help set expectations and reduce the anxiety of getting immediate responses.
